10 Tips To Take Control Over Pests In An Apartment

Getting rid of pests in an apartment can be challenging. You cannot control what your neighbors are doing to keep the pests away, so you need to focus on what you can control. Here are some ways to keep your apartment pest-free. 

  1. Spray peppermint oil for mice. If you notice a mouse in your apartment, put a ¼ cup of water in a spray bottle with 40 drops of peppermint oil. Spray around your baseboards and all entry points. The oil keeps the mice away.
  2. Use the disposal for wet garbage. Wet garbage, such as beverages, should be poured down your sink. The garbage can be a strong attraction for several types of pests. 
  3. Seal your pet's food. If you have a pet in the apartment, store all of its food in secure containers. You need to clean up the pet's food and water bowls daily to avoid attracting pests. 
  4. Avoid storing items under the bed. Bed bugs, roaches, mice, and other pests can hide in items that you store under your bed. If you have to put anything under the bed, put it in a tightly closed plastic container first. 
  5. Check for leaks monthly. Each month, make it a habit to check all of your faucets for leaks. A small leak can be a continuous water source for pests. Contact your landlord for repairs immediately. 
  6. Take the trash out daily to the dumpster. Avoid leaving trash inside and outside of your apartment. Outside trash can attract bugs who can get in and out of your home when you open the doors. 
  7. Vacuum on a consistent basis. Undetected food particles on your carpet can attract a range of bugs. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis each week to get up any food particles that you cannot see. 
  8. Check your refrigerator weekly. Old food in your refrigerator can also be an attraction for pests. Each week, go through your refrigerator and make sure that you haven't missed any leftovers or uncovered foods that need to be tossed.
  9. Declutter your apartment. Each month, take the time to go through your apartment and toss old papers and other items that you no longer need or use. The fewer objects that you have laying around, the fewer hiding spaces the bugs have.
  10. Schedule pest control. Even though you live in an apartment, it is a smart decision to have your apartment treated by a professional on a regular basis. Taking preventative action now can save you a big pest control problem later.
