How To Maintain Your Steel Replacement Door
Many homeowners choose steel doors because they do not require as much maintenance as conventional wooden doors. However, you can make your steel replacement door last even longer if you take good care of it.
Clean Your Door Frequently
When caring for your home exterior, be sure to also clean your steel replacement door. Not only will this make the exterior of your home look much better, but it will also increase the longevity of your home. To clean your exterior door, get a bucket and fill it with water and mild soap. Then, use a soft bristle brush to scrub the door. Dip the brush into the bucket to cover it with the water and mild soap. As you brush dirt off your door, you will want to use light and firm strokes. Brushing too hard can scratch the door. Then, rinse the door with water and allow it to dry in the sun.
Fix Sticking Doors
When your door is sticking, the size of your door in relation to the size of the entryway has changed. If you do not resolve this problem, the sticking can cause damage to your replacement door. In many cases, you can simply remove the dirt that has built up near the edges of the door. You might also need to tighten your hinges.
Repaint Your Door if Paint Bubbles or Peels Off
The paint on your steel door may begin to peel off. Not only will this look bad, but it will also reduce the protective benefits of your paint coat. This can also be a problem if your door has become scratched, exposing the steel underneath. When the steel is not protected from the elements, there is a greater risk of corrosion.
To replace the old paint, scrape off the peeling or bubbling paint with a putty knife. Then, sand the area with medium-grade sandpaper, which will roughen the door and allow for the paint to better adhere. You will then need to use a strong cleaning solution consisting of trisodium phosphate and warm water to prepare the area. This is a strong solution, so wear rubber gloves when applying it. Rinse it off with a garden hose.
Wipe the area dry and apply a steel primer. You will need to wait at least two hours for the primer to set. Then, paint the area you are working on with the same type of paint that you used to paint the original door.
