Are You Planning to Reseed Your Lawn?

Customize Your Roller Shades In 3 Easy Steps!

A window without a window treatment leaves a room looking bare and unfinished. Dressing up windows with cornices, roller shades, blinds or even plantation shutters will completely transform the look of your home. Roller shades are really great because they can offer great insulation and nearly black out a room at night to ensure a great night's sleep. If you love what your roller shade does for you but are looking for ways to spruce it up without spending a fortune overhauling every window treatment in your home, customize it following these 3 easy steps!

Step 1: Preparation

The end goal of this project is to recover your roller shade with fabric. It is a no-sew project that can be done in a day when proper preparation is done. You will need:

  • Enough fabric to cover your shade (this is dependent upon your window size)
  • Adhesive
    • Glue gun & glue sticks
    • Fabric or spray adhesive
  • Iron & ironing board
  • Sheet of cardboard to use as a workspace

The cardboard will protect your surfaces from the heat of the iron if your ironing board isn't a large enough work space, glue gun (if you are using one) and adhesive.

When buying fabric, consider the direction the print of the fabric runs. If you need the print to run a certain direction, make sure you have the necessary width and length to achieve the finished look you have in mind.

Step 2: Assemble

Cut your fabric to match the size of your shade. You will want all the edges to overhang slightly. This overhang allows you to fold the excess around to the back of the shade. This results in a finished look with seamless lines.

There are a couple of different ways you can assemble your custom shade. If you are worried about bunching, bubbling or sagging you will want to apply two different adhesives to the fabric.  First, apply a spray adhesive to the back of your fabric. Carefully smooth the fabric over the shade from the top down. This will eliminate creases. Once the spray adhesive has dried, fold the excess fabric over the back of the shade and pin it down with dots of hot glue.

If you are looking to further customize your roller shade, don't be afraid to trim the edges with ribbon or the bottom edge with a fringe of some kind. You can even apply a cute applique!

Step 3: Rehang & Enjoy

Once the glue has dried, your roller shade is ready to be rehung. Simply snap it back into place and test it out.

You can makeover your window treatments in a matter of minutes for a fraction of the cost of buying new. You don't even have to spend a fortune on fabric. Look to see what you already have in your stash. You can use coupons or shop sales to find the perfect fabric for recovering your blinds. You can add design and depth to any room in no time at all.
